Aller guten Dinge sind drei. Ich freue mich sehr, dass ich Euch heute zum dritten #SaturDye eine Handfärberin vorstellen darf, die mich vor über zwei Jahren mit nur einem Bild sprachlos gemacht hat. Ganz konkret geht es um dieses Bild, das Belinda von Featherfin Yarn im Juni 2017 auf Instagram postete. Dieses Grün hat mich völlig umgehauen.

Ich darf Euch heute also Belinda, die kluge Frau hinter dem Label Featherfin Yarn vorstellen.

Belinda hat übrigens den strukturiertesten und harmonischsten Instagram-Feed, den ich kenne. Wirklich toll!

Nach dem geposteten Bild des grünen Stranges vor zwei Jahren dauerte es nicht lange, da hatte ich eine E-Mail von Featherfin Yarn in meinem Postfach. Belinda fragte mich, ob ich nicht Lust hätte, ein Projekt aus ihrer Wolle zu stricken. Sie war damals die erste Handfärberin, die mir die Chance zu einer Kooperation gab. Das fand ich wirklich toll, denn sie ging damit ja auch ein Risiko ein. Ich hatte vor zwei Jahren kaum Follower und sie wusste ja nicht, ob ich aus ihrer Wolle wirklich etwas stricke oder sonst was damit mache.

Also strickte ich aus ihrer handgefärbten Wolle den Earnest Cardigan von Joji Locatelli. Eine Strickjacke, die ich heute noch heiß und innig liebe und wirklich oft, oft trage.

Randnotiz: ich habe vier Stränge Featherfin Yarn Super Sock in der Farbe Red Amethyst verstrickt.

Im Herbst 2018 hatten wir dann ein weiteres gemeinsames Projekt. Wir brachten ein Strickpaket für eine Mütze auf den Markt. Mit allem, was man so zum Stricken braucht. Ein Strang Featherfin Yarn Cashmerino, eine Anleitung für die Mütze Teardrops von mir, Perlen zum Einstricken, ein Projektbeutel, Maschenmarkierer und ein label von Dortex. Die Zusammenarbeit klappte wunderbar und ich denke, dass das nicht unser letztes gemeinsames Projekt war.

Heute hat sich Featherfin Yarn weiterentwickelt. Was 2014 auf Etsy mit einem Shop begann hat just in diesen Tagen die nächste Stufe erreicht: eine eigene Webseite mit eigenem Shop. Whop whop!

Hi Julia, die Freude ist ganz meinerseits.

Seit wann färbst Du/Wie bist Du zum Färben gekommen? 
Meine ersten Färbe-Experimente haben, denke ich, in 2013 gestartet und in 2014 habe ich dann meinen Etsy Shop eröffnet.

Auf die Idee bin ich gekommen, nachdem ich selbst meine ersten handgefärbten Knäule erworben habe (3 Gradienten von The Unique Sheep). Das hat mein Interesse für dieses Handwerk geweckt. Nach etwas Recherche habe ich ein einfaches Starterset Säure-Farbe und Wolle gekauft (die kratzigste Wolle, die ich je gefärbt habe!) und jetzt stehe ich hier mit einem ganzen Raum voller eigengefärbter Wolle! 😂

Was macht Dir am Färben besonders großen Spaß?
Klingt dumm, aber es sind die Farben. Eine wunderschöne Farbe lässt mein Herz flattern und ich bewundere all die Nuancen, die sich in Schichten und Wellen über handgefärbte Semi-Solids erstrecken! Die Einzigartigkeit und die Tiefe von handgefärbtem Garn, zusammen mit der Begeisterung, die meine Kunden mit mir teilen, lassen mich immer wieder zu den Färbetöpfen zurückkehren. ☺️

Färbst Du nur oder spinnst/strickst/häkelst/webst Deine Garne auch?
Hehe, ertappt 😅 Ich sammle diverse Geräte um meine Garne weiterzuverarbeiten. Ich bin ein großer Fan von Ebay was das angeht und habe in den letzten Jahren einen 8 Shaft Table Loom und eine Brother Strickmaschine plus Erweiterung gebraucht erstanden.
Dazu halte ich immer Ausschau nach interessanten Stricknadeln und habe erst neulich beschlossen, meine chaotische Nadelschublade mal in eine Nadeltasche umzusortieren. Dazu nähe und spinne ich noch von Zeit zu Zeit, aber das geht ja über Arbeit mit den Garnen selber hinaus.

Wenn Du Deine Färbungen mit drei Worten beschreiben würdest, welche wären das?
Zeitlos. Edel. Harmonisch.

Machst Du noch was neben dem Färben? Oder bist Du mittlerweile hauptberuflich Färberin?
Ich bin tatsächlich noch Studentin. Nach meinem Bachelorabschluss in Chemie, habe ich beschlossen mich nochmals in der Uni für Wirtschaftsinformatik einzuschreiben. Ich genieße es zu lernen und ich belege mehrere Kurse, die mir auch einen großen Mehrwert zum Führen eines Unternehmens liefern.
Vielleicht bin ich nach dem Studium dann ja imstande ein Vollzeit Business aus Featherfin Yarn zu machen, das würde mich sehr freuen!

Färbst Du mit einer speziellen Methode? Keine Sorge, Du sollst keine Geheimnisse verraten.
Ich färbe inzwischen ausschließlich Semi-Solids mit einer Technik namens Kettle-dyeing. Wobei meine "kettle", also Töpfe, inzwischen große Gastronomiebehälter auf Induktionsherden sind, um möglichst effizient und energiesparend zu arbeiten.
Jeder, der mal einen Färbekurs bei mir gemacht hat, kann auch augenrollend berichten, wie viel Gedanken ich mir um die Farben selber mache. Meine Methode involviert das Ausbalancieren von warmen und kühlen Grundfarben, Anpassen der Farbintensität und der richtigen Anzahl Schwarzanteile. Mir ist das eine reine Freude, involviert aber einiges an Farbtheorie und Prozentrechnung, was nicht jedermanns Sache ist 😅😋

Wie sehr beeinflussen Dich Trends in der Strickszene? Zum Beispiel Speckles, Neon und Mohair, um nur drei zu nennen?
Nicht sehr. Ich beobachte gerne Trends, aber mein Konzept basiert eher auf einem zeitlosen Ansatz. Meine Wolle und die Werke daraus sollen auch noch nach vielen Jahren modisch sein, da sich die Investition ja auch lohnen soll. Dabei achte ich darauf, dass sich die Farben “capsule-wardrobe”-mäßig zusammenstellen lassen. Daher berühren mich Trends wenig.

Wie muss man sich Deinen Färbealltag vorstellen?
Ein Färbetag ist ein guter Tag! Am Morgen lege ich die zu färbenden Garne in Wasser ein, damit sie komplett benetzt sind und sich die Farbe später gleichmäßig verteilen kann. Besondere Garne, wie Pure Silk, brauchen dafür teilweise 24h, diese müssen also weit vorher vorbereitet werden.
Während der restlichen Morgenstunden, frühstücke ich dann, berechne die Farbrezepte für die anstehenden Bestellungen (ich färbe fast nur auf Vorbestellung) und erledige Unikram oder Buchhaltung.
Der Rest des Tages gehört dem Färben der nun vorbereiteten Garne. Dazu gehört Farben lösen, zu den Garnen geben, pH-Werte anpassen und die korrekten Temperaturkurven fahren, damit die Farbe waschfest wird. Ich spüle jedes Batch nach dem Abkühlen kurz durch und hänge sie dann auf meinen Balkon in den Wind. Das macht die Fertigungszeit leider abhängig vom Wetter, aber was soll man machen, Handarbeit braucht seine Zeit.

Wie gehst Du mit dem Thema sozialer und ökologischer Nachhaltigkeit beim Färben bzw. Auswahl der Materialien um?
Ich selber kaufe keine Kleidung mehr, die über 20% aus Kunststoffen besteht, da ich weiß wie schwer bis unmöglich es ist, das zu recyclen. Daher achte ich auch bei meiner Wolle darauf, einen möglichst kleinen Fußabdruck zu hinterlassen und bevorzuge natürliche Materialien, am liebsten noch mit Zertifikaten, wie von OEKO TEX, oder recyceltes Pflanzenmaterial wie Tencel und Viskose. Zudem habe ich eine gute Routine aufgebaut, um möglichst wasser- und stromsparend zu arbeiten.

Hast Du eine bestimmte Lieblingsfarbe oder –färbung?
Meine Lieblinge sind zum großen Teil auch Kundenlieblinge. Ganz vorne dabei sind “Ruby”, “Cornflower” und “Red Amethyst”. Und obwohl es nicht der größte Renner bei den Bestellungen ist, liebe ich die Farbe “Roses”.

Was hast Du gerade für Aktionen laufen, die uns nicht entgehen dürfen? Oder welche Pläne hast Du für die Zukunft von Featherfin Yarn?

All good things come in threes. I am very happy to present you today for the third #SaturDye an indie dyer, who left me speechless more than two years ago with only one picture. Specifically, it's about this picture that Belinda posted on Instagram in June 2017. This green has completely blown my mind.

Today I would like to introduce Belinda, the clever woman behind the label Featherfin Yarn.

After the posted picture of the green skein two years ago, it didn't take long until I had an email from Featherfin Yarn in my mailbox. Belinda asked me if I would like to knit a project with her handdyed wool. She was the first indie dyer who gave me the chance to cooperate. I really liked that, because she also took a risk. Two years ago I had hardly any followers and she didn't know whether I would really knit something out of her wool or do anything else with it.

So I knitted Joji Locatelli's Earnest Cardigan. A cardigan that I still love and that I often, often wear.

Note: I used four skeins of Featherfin Yarn Super Sock in Red Amethyst colorway.

In autumn 2018 we had another joint project. We launched a knitting kit for a hat. With everything you need for knitting. One skein Featherfin Yarn Cashmerino, pattern for the teardrops hat by me, beads for knitting, a project bag, stitch markers and a Dortex label. The collaboration worked out wonderfully and I don't think this was our last project together.

Hi Julia, thanks for having me.

Since when do you dye/How did you come to dye?
I think, my first dyeing experiments started in 2013 and I opened my Etsy Shop in 2014.
Dyeing peaked my interest after my first own purchase of hand dyed yarn (3 gradient sets by The Unique Sheep). After some research I bought a dyeing starter kit (it contained the itchiest yarn I have ever dyed!), and now I am standing here in a dyeing studio full of self-dyed yarn! 😂

What do you enjoy most about dyeing?
It sounds stupid, but it's the colors in and of itself. A beautiful color makes my heart beat faster! I adore all the nuances and color waves rippling through semi solids. The uniqueness and depth of hand dyed color, together with the passion that I share with my customers, these things get me back to my dyeing pots every time. ☺

Do you just dye or spin/knit/crochet/weave your yarns too?
Hehe, yes 😅 My husband regularly complains about my impulsive collecting of things for my crafting needs. Not just small stuff, like interesting knitting needles, which I recently had to move from my chaotic needle drawer to a neat needle case. But I also acquired a vintage 8 shaft table loom and knitting machine, plus addition, from ebay. I don’t work with everything at once of course, but I like to rotate through my fiber crafts.
Next to working with my yarn, I also sometimes sew my own clothes and spin some raw fleece I get from local alpaca farms. I might be a craftaholic.

If you have to describe your colorways in three words, what would they be?
Timeless. Elegant. Harmonious.

Do you do anything besides dyeing? Or are you now a full-time dyer?
I am in fact still a student at a university. After my Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, I chose to enroll again in Business Information Systems. I enjoy learning and I really get a lot of value out of this new field to improve my entrepreneurial skills. With luck, I am able to make Featherfin Yarn a full time business after my graduation, which would be just great!

Do you dye with a special method?
Nowadays, I only use the kettle dyeing method for my semi solids. But my “kettles” are now big gastronomy pans placed on induction stoves, to reduce energy consumption.
Also, I pour a lot of effort in creating my colors. My method involves balancing out warm versus cool base colors and achieving the right depth of color or black ratio. This process involves quite some math and color theory, which is not for everybody, but fun for me 😅😋

How much do trends in the knitting scene influence you? For example speckles, neon colors and mohair, to name just three?
Scarcely. Featherfin Yarn is going for a more timeless approach. The yarn and the garments made from it are supposed to still be modern and stylish in the years to come, so the splurge can pay off.
Also, my colors are very harmonious, so you can create a really beautiful handmade capsule-wardrobe. And trends do not always have a place in that.

How do I imagine your day-to-day dyeing?
A dye day is a good day! In the morning I start by soaking the yarns, so they are fully wetted. Some yarns like Pure Silk take even 24h for this step.
During the rest of the morning, I’ll make my breakfast, sit down for some studying or accounting and calculate the dye recipes for the afternoon.
The rest of the day is dyeing time. I dissolve the dyes, adjust the pH-level of the water and heat it all up to achieve washfast coloration. After the yarn cooled down, I rinse it and hang it to dry. As I let the yarn air dry on my balcony, that makes the process very sensible to the weather, but that is also part of the handmade process.

How do you deal with social and environmental sustainability when dyeing or selecting materials?
When I buy clothes, I am really conscious about not going over 20% synthetics in a piece, because I know how difficult it is to recycle. So I am of course also thoughtful about leaving a low environmental footprint with my yarns. I prefer choosing all natural materials, better even with seals by OEKO TEX or GOTS, or recycled plant fibers like Viscose or Tencel. Besides that, I have build a well thought out routine to save on water and energy throughout my dyeing process.

Do you have a favorite color or dye?
Most of my favorites are also bestsellers. Like “Ruby”, “Red Amethyst” and “Cornflower”. And even if it’s not as popular, I am in love with the colorway “Roses”!

Do you have any special projects running right now that we must not miss? Or what plans do you have for the future of Featherfin Yarn?
My newest step is the brand new opening of my own webshop! I am so proud that I did that by myself and would love to hear everybody's opinion on it!
